Paul Gavarni (French, 1804–1866) Il ne m'oterait seulement pas mon chapeau ! (He won’t even take my hat off to me!), 1842 Lithograph Gift of Eugene L. Garbaty, 1951.79.6

One of Gavarni’s many bohemian bachelors, likely a law student, refuses to acknowledge his hat maker as he passes him in the street. The law student, like the lorette or aspiring courtesan, lives almost entirely on credit and rarely pays his bills. The hat he refuses to tip to his hat maker, like the cane he jauntily twirls, hasn’t been paid off and probably never will be.
