Conclusion et morale

Paul Gavarni (French, 1804–1866) Conclusion et Morale (Accusation d'adultère) [Conclusion and Moral (Accusation of Adultery)], 1838 Lithograph Gift of Eugene L. Garbaty, 1951.79.132

A young man and his mistress stand accused of adultery. He holds his head high and defiantly crosses his arms. She hides her lowered head in shame beneath a large bonnet. Through the fig-ures’ different postures Gavarni conveys the unequal distribution of blame in adulterous rela-tionships. If the woman pictured here is married, she risks jail time for her offense.
