Vois-tu, camarade

(You see, friend, this is how you'll always find true artists...), 1838 Lithograph Gift of Eugene L. Garbaty, 1951.79.10

Two rapins, or painter’s apprentices, “share” a meal. The younger, more naïve of the two, seated on the stove, will have to learn the hard way that the law of the great capi-tal—Balzac called it a jungle—is “every man for himself.”

— You see, friend, this is how you'll always find true artists... sharing everything...like brothers...through good times and bad times ... everything! Your stew is excellent! —Yes, but friend, you haven't left me any!
