Le Jayotype

Honoré Daumier (French, 1808–1879) Le Jayotype (The Jayotype), 1842 Lithograph General Acquisitions Fund, 1944.189.15

Mr. Jay, inventor of the Jayotype hat, was a famous Pari-sian milliner working in the 1840s. His shop was located near the office of Le Charivari, and advertisements for his hats, like the suits of the famous tailor Humann, were fea-tured in its pages. In taking this gentleman’s measurements, Mr. Jay has perhaps uncovered some in-criminating phrenological evidence. Mr. Jay and the gentleman’s wife see what he cannot: his cuckold’s horns.

Mr. Jay: —You are married, Sir? The Gentleman: —I certainly am, but how the devil can you tell? Mr. Jay: —Oh! This instrument is so perfect that no contour of the head, no protuberance of the forehead, escapes detection. The Gentleman: —Ah! How very ingenious!
