Alcibiade Cliquet

Paul Gavarni (French, 1804–1866) Alcibiade Cliquet a loué une chambre dans le quartier de la Chaussée d'Antin (Alcibiade Cliquet has rented a room in the Chaussée d’Antin quarter), 1839 Lithograph Gift of Eugene L. Garbaty, 1951.79.34

Gavarni created the student equivalent of one of Daumier’s emblematic named types in a series of prints featuring Alcibiade Cliquet (Chevalier de Nogaroulet). Like Balzac’s Eugène de Rastignac, Alcibiade Cliquet is an impoverished aristocrat whose family has sent him to Paris to study law and work his way up the social ladder (a cliquet is a kind of ratchet). Like Eugène, Alcibiade has made his way from the bohemian Left Bank to the Chaussée d’Antin, the new financial district close to the Stock Exchange where the wealthy bourgeoisie lived. Gavarni’s students are recog-nizable by their long hair and beards, which set them apart from the bourgeoisie.

Alcibiade Cliquet a loué une chambre dans le quartier de la Chaussée d'Antin. Il a acheté un fauteuil et une robe de chambre. Sa portière lui annonce un de ses compatriotes, et il dit : Faites entrer !

Alcibiade Cliquet has rented a room in the Chaussée d’Antin quarter. He has bought an armchair and a robe. His concierge announces the arrival of one of his friends, and he says: Bring him in!
